Speaker for
May 2010
On Tuesday the
18th May 2010 Sean Peterson from Veridot spoke about and illustrated the
use of Microdot asset protection and recovery systems.
The essence of the product(s) available and their uses quoted from
Sean's talk follows:
"Statistics are alarming. I am not
going to get too involved with the technical aspects however the
Microdot system is a fairly unique technology.
Essentially a Microdot is a tiny little
pinprick sized nickrl dot that carries a unique code that identifies the
owner of an asset that has been Microdotted.. To give an example this
small tin contains 10 000 tiny little dots that get applied to a
vehicle. These microdots are all the same but unique to that vehicle and
identify the owner of the vehicle. The stats from Business Against Crime
indicates that vehicles that are Microdotted are 50% less likely to be
subject to criminal events. BMW, Nissan and all the Toyota taxis are
Microdotted in the factory and the recovery rate of the vehicles is as
high as 90%. Once a year the police destroy about 18 000 vehicles
because they cannot identify the owners. For a thief to remove 10 000 of
these Microdots that are fixed with the strongest adhesive in the world
is impossible. If they do try to remove them the police only have to
locate one to positively identify the rightful owner.
It is a very simple process for the
police to sms the code to the central database and receive a return sms
providing the details of the vehicle and the owners name and contact
details.
Needless to say veridot has entered
into an agreement with Compendium Insurance who are Westville based to
provide a significant discount on insurance on Microdotted vehicles.
Enforce is about to rollout a service
whereby every new home security contract will include a Microdotting of
assets feature. This will make assets "contaminated" in that
the thieves already know that Microdotted items are difficult to dispose
of. A home showing a logo that it's assets are protected by Microdots
has a strong chance of being bypassed by thieves.
What Microdotting does is twofold. It
lets the thieves know that the goods are tarnished which acts as a
strong deterrent and also if the assets are recovered by the
police it is simple to identify the rightful owner and to then get a
conviction. The acceptance of this technology has been widely acclaimed
and taken up in Australia and will most likely continue in South
Africa.'
The asset protection Microdotting is
reducing the theft of company assets as the employees know that it is
near impossible to prove that such assets belong to anyone other than
the company.
Question: How are the
Microdots applied?
Answer: With a motor vehicle there are predetermined standards
and only certified teams may undertake the task. The dots are sprayed from
underneath and must be applied in at least 18 locations. However the
dots for a given vehicle are unique and usually enough to do at least 35
locations. With respect to household assets it is permitted to buy a kit
as a DIY product. It consists of a phial of dots and an applicator. You
mark your assets and register them on line. Insurance companies love it
because not only are the assets less attractive to steal but are also
easy to identify if suspected as stolen.
Question: What happens if you sell
your car?
Answer: Very simple. You notify the registering authority who
will go through a simple verification routine to identify you and you
submit the details of the new owner. If by chance the new owner
details were not submitted timorously the registering authority would
contact the previous owner and ask for details of the new owner.
Question: How many household items
can be marked from one kit?
Answer: Normally about 18 though up to 20 is possible? When
registering these items you are prompted to provide full product
description, date of purchase, price and retailer. This simplifies
submission of claims.
Question: How long do they last?
Answer: At least 25 years. Initially is was expected to pre-age
the products to at least 25years. An additional severe test was to blow
up a vehicle with a bomb that subjected the Microdots to heat in excess
up to 1300o. Most Microdots were locatable.
Question: I live at home. Can I
share a home kit with my mother?
Answer: Certainly. With a home kit you can share the kit and all
assets will have the same ID number. If there are more assets than the
kit provides you simply buy another kit and register the assets under
their specific ID numbers.
Question: How much does it cost
for a car to be done?
Answer: R1315-00 excl VAT. You should recover this cost within 8
months by negotiating your insurance premium.
To get the history of this technology
simply Google Datadot
Australia to see the huge acceptance and success of the technology.
Soon the micodotting of copper cable will
make selling cable as scrap near impossible.
Also insurance companies can check with
repairs to see if a claim for new parts fitted by a panel beater is
false as a repaired original component would still have original
microdots on it.
Second hand car sales from from next year
will have to be microdotted by law.
The biggest car rental company has its
fleet microdotted and theft has been reduced by 50%

"Police promote parts marking
in all its forms and of course this one (DataDots) is a spray, so there
is very little of the vehicle that the spray will not reach."
David Ryan, Head of Stolen Vehicles Squad
Metropolitan Police (London)

"What we have seen here today is
DNA for vehicles; 10,000 microdots are sprayed all over a vehicle .....
and that will make information available to the Police that was never
available to them before."
Mr Paul Whelan,
NSW Australia Police Minister
