On Tuesday the 21st July the
Westville CPF were extremely fortunate to listen to a presentation from
Stuart Knight who was billed as a motivational speaker and be assured,
he is just that and much more. As with many speakers true
motivation comes from a vision and dedication. Stuart has a committed
involvement with the CPF objectives and an enviable record of success in
motivating the community in facilitating the reduction of crime in
conjunction with the SAPS.
Stuart was Chairman of the Town Hill CPF
for 3 years and during that time there was an amazing reduction crime.
In his speech he outlined some of the no-nonsense strategies that the
community put in place and yes the community took to the proposals and
got involved and were justly rewarded with success. The effort has
been sustainable not just a short term blitz on one facet of crime.
The CPF will bring Stuart back and
publicly announce the event. It will be must attend event for the
Westville Community.
Stuart has provided s few tips listed
below
COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION TIPS
- Homes to have a strong gate between
the living and sleeping areas.
- Strong burglar bars (Preferably flat
iron) welded onto steel frames or built into brickwork), especially
on all windows (bedroom + en suite bathroom) in sleeping area - keep
all windows closed at night.
- Communicate and work with your
neighbours - know their vehicle registration numbers, phone numbers
servants, and what type of dogs they have and do they sleep inside
or outside.
- Work closely with and manage all
security firms and their systems. Never ever take for granted or
trust any security gadgets as these are only deterrents. Most
security firms will overstate on sales of systems - it is their form
of income.
- Increase your awareness and be
vigilant to anything strange or abnormal in your neighborhood - work
with security guards and "Bobbies on the beat" in the
area.
- Never park your vehicles on the street
assuming the alarm system will alert you.
- Take photo-copies of of all your
servant's ID documents and contract workers who work in/on property
or home. Retain these - they may come in useful at a later stage.
- Be very vigilant of any stranger,
beggar, sales people etc. who are not normally in the neighbourhood - this will include vagrants who may ramble through your rubbish
bins.
- Work closely and communicate with the
Police in your area - however it is important to remember they
cannot act concretely on 'hear-say' evidence which does not exist
according to the S A Constitution.
- Make use of private detectives to get
prima faeca evidence to help the Police convict criminals and
corrupt members of the community and Police.
- Don't complain, do the correct thing
and follow the laws of the Republic of S A.
