Minutes of the Westville Community Policing Forum held on 16th February 2010


1. Welcome: 
Mr Roger Day, the deputy Chairam, welcomed those present to the meeting. 

2. Apologies:
Mr Kevin Harvey, Mr Nick Potgieter, Mr Dennis Cockhead, Mr Malcolm Hawkey, Mrs Karen Delport.

3. Confirmation of Minutes:
The previous Minutes were confirmed by Mr Andy Tribe and seconded by Mr Julian Carter.

4. Matters Arising:
Nil

5. Bust of the Month:
Cst Clark announced the Bust of the Month would be awarded to Cst Aubrey Thango, who arrested a housebreaking suspect who was wanted for several offences in the Westville North area. After spotting the suspect at approximately 2am, he continued searching the area until he finally arrested him at 6:15am. 

6. Guest Speakers:
1. Mr Richard Palmer spoke again about the launching of the community magazine, Crime Zero.
2. Mr Jeslin Ganasen of Smart Trac described and demonstrated his product which is a tracker unit that can be a portable hand held, pocket size instrument or fitted to a vehicle, trailer or goods. The tracker uses real time GPRS signals which transmit to a modem and is displayed on a Google Earth format. The product is bought once off with the instrument, software and instruction, with no monthly charges other than minimal charges for your own sim card and nominal pay as you go cell phone charges. The product also comes in a portable form smaller than the average cell phone and can be used to track family members as well as two way cell phone contact with them using up to 2 dedicated numbers on the device.

7. Crime Report:
Supt D.M. Singh presented the crime report. He mentioned the tragic and unnecessary murder of an elderly woman in Westville North. Supt Singh stated that there had been an increase in house breaking in the Westville North and Berea West area. Arrests had been made and detectives were making head way in their investigations. Supt Singh stated that the full crime report would be loaded onto the Westbeat webpage by Mr Andy Tribe.

8. Service Delivery Improvement Program:
Mr Rusty Damp reported that the majority of his ring around resulted in positive feedback on the delivery of service by the SAPS. He stated one case in which the complainant had been dissatisfied with the response time of the SAPS and this was being addressed. Mr Damp also said that complainants were still experiencing excessively long waits for fingerprints experts to visit scenes.

9. General
Mr Julian Carter told the meeting that there have been recent hijackings of parents waiting to pick up children at schools in the Durban area. He urged people to always be alert when driving in their vehicles and when stationary. 
A member of the floor requested Supt Singh to address the vagrancy and drunks that hang around the supermarket at Salamanca Centre at night. Supt Singh said that the situation will be sorted out.
A member of the floor said to Supt Lionet of the Metro Police Service that she had noted frequent road blocks which had been conducted in conjunction with the SAPS and this was welcomed by the community.
