Minutes of the Westville
Community Policing Forum held on 19th January 2010 |
1. Welcome:
Mr Kevin Harvey welcomed all present for the New Year.
2. Apologies:
Insp David Bramley.
3. Confirmation of Minutes:
The previous Minutes were confirmed by Mr Julian Carter and seconded by Mr Andy Tribe.
4. Matters Arising:
Nil
5. Bust of the Month:
Bust of the Month: Supt Singh announced that the “Bust of the Month” was awarded to Constables Tobakgale and Johnson of the Westville SAPS Crime Prevention Unit. The two Policemen arrested a suspect car thief and recovered the vehicle, a VW
Jetta, minutes after it had been stolen outside the Westville Post Office. Supt Singh mentioned that the arrest could not have been made possible if it were not for their quick thinking and reaction as well as the tip off received from a member of the community.
6. Guest Speakers:
Mr Richard Palmer spoke about the launching of a new community magazine named Crime Zero. He spoke about its intention to be a positive publication for the Westville Community and will have local events covered, crime tips and other useful and interesting articles. Mr Palmer said that funding for the magazine will come from advertisers and desired businesses in the Westville area to advertise themselves, their products or services in the magazine. Cst Clark spoke about children’s pages. He intends to run interesting articles for the youth and hold competitions for children and teenagers. He said that the content for the magazine should stem from what the community themselves desire to read and be informed of and said suggestions for articles could be forwarded to him.
7. Crime Report:
Supt D.M. Singh presented the crime report. He stated that during the December festive period, crime had largely stabilised and serious crime such as armed robbery, car jacking, house robbery and house breakings were significantly down. Supt Sing stated that the full crime report would be loaded onto the Westbeat webpage by Mr Andy Tribe.
8. Service Delivery Improvement Program:
Mr Rusty Damp reported that the majority of his ring around resulted in positive feedback on the delivery of service by the SAPS. He stated one case in which the complainant had been dissatisfied with the response time of the SAPS. Mr Damp also indicated that there needed to be better efficiency and communication surrounding the lifting of fingerprints by the relevant department.
9. General
General: Mr Kevin Harvey expressed his sincere thanks to Westville Family Pick & Pay and Peter Clarke’s Pharmacy for sponsoring kit bags to the Safety Net organisation.
He further stated that the Westville Rotary had produced and was distributing a DVD created by the Team Talk pupils of Marist Brothers’ College. The DVD was about violence in schools and solutions the pupils had come up
