Minutes of the Westville Community Policing Forum held on 15th September 2009

1. PRESENT:

2. APOLOGIES:

3. WELCOME:
 Mr Kevin Harvey welcomed all present, especially Supt Lionet of Metro Police and the SAPS students. Mr Harvey wished all Muslim Community members a happy Eid Mubarak.

4. CONFIRMATION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES:
Proposed by Mr Malcolm Hawkey, seconded by Mr Julian Carter.

5. MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES:
 Nil.

6. BUST OF THE MONTH:
Cst ME Mkize for an excellent housebreaking arrest carried over from the previous month.

7. ADDRESS:
 Mr Julian Carter shared with the forum the experience of his son who was hijacked and taken with his car in the Pinetown area recently. He told how he was forced to draw money at an ATM and had his credit card stolen. He was left in the boot of his car in Umlazi, from which he escaped and was kindly assisted by members of the community there.

8. CRIME REPORT:
Supt Singh reported on two incidents of housebreaking where upon investigation, suspects had been arrested and linked to the crimes. He indicated that from August to September there had been a 12% decrease in housebreakings reported. Sector 1 was problematic on Fridays and Saturdays. House Robberies were prevalent on Tuesdays and Fridays and armed robberies, Fridays and Saturdays. Theft of Motor vehicles, problematic in sector 4 on Saturdays.

11. ADDRESS:
 Insp DP Bramley gave a brief address on the different policing departments within South Africa, their roles and functions, as well as describing key identification marks on the various vehicles.

12. ADDRESS:
 Cst Clark Spoke about the intuitive of spreading crime awareness and tips to domestic workers in the area. He passes out bilingual pamphlets for home owners to discuss with their employees and asked the attendees to copy the pamphlet and distribute it to as many colleagues, friends and family as they can.

13. GENERAL:
 Supt Singh welcomed new members of the community to the CPF meeting. Mr Julian Carter explained the update as to the distribution of the Westville Watch Paper. Supt Singh spoke about the attention in the press and web the Pavilion off ramp is getting. He encouraged people not to panic, but take reasonable precautions at all intersections. Supt Lionet echoed this as he said people too quickly spread misinformation over the web, making one isolated incident seem like several.
