In the movie “Full Metal Jacket”, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman says to his troops, “From this day forward, wherever you go, every Marine is your brother.” The same very same thing applies to the SAPS. We go through heavy training together and work in extraordinary conditions together. Bonds between us go beyond friendship. I might never have met a particular member’s family, but crouched in a cold, damp bush waiting to penetrate a house with dangerous, armed criminals, binds us with something very special. We go into situations, actively hunting the same individuals most people fear to cross and rely on the man next to us.

In 2004, Constable N.L Hembert arrived at Westville SAPS. He served with distinction in the Crime Prevention Unit, making many excellent arrests and recoveries. He was and still is superbly fit, and is a master of three languages. Greater things called Larry and he successfully applied to the National Intervention Unit. After lengthy training in rural and urban combat, this department of the SAPS goes after the nastiest of the nasties, the lowest of the underworld, and comes up smiling. Part of his duties also encompasses protection of VIPs such as visiting sports teams and guarding at special events. These highly trained operators also work on information tracing criminal gangs all over the province.

He has now been away for about three years. When he is not clawing his way through the bush in Kokstad or somewhere, he is visiting his old comrades in arms here at Westville. That is what I’m talking about. He is in the elite, but keeps close contact with his roots. We had a nice surprise recently when his wife joined our station in a clerical position. On top of having the other half of the clan join us, we now get all the up to date news of what our man has been up to.

We look forward to both Hembert’s smiling faces and we wish them well in their careers.
