BUST
OF THE MONTH
JUNE
2011 The arrest and conviction of two house robbers was a
collective effort by Warrant Officer Jackson and Constable
Thobakgale who made the arrest and the diligence of Constable Zulu
who successfully opposed bail and with all three gave evidence
that was accurately thoroughly presented before the magistrate to
secure an effective 10 years imprisonment.
APRIL
2011 The B O M for April was awarded to W/O Desen Pillay for his role in several excellent arrests made. In the first instance, he was instrumental in breaking the back of the robberies that were occuring in the Baden Rd area, by responding quickly on one report and speedily tracing the suspects to Chesterville and arresting them. Many complainants have
since come forward and positively identified the duo and it is expected that they will be spending a long time between prison and court answering for the individual cases.
In the second incident a week later, W/O Pillay ran a foot chase after a suspect in pouring rain. the suspect had been carrying suspected stolen property on the N3. The chase went from the N3 to the N2, M13 and eventually Pillay caught up the the man at the KFC at 45th Cutting, Sherwood.
Well done to that Policeman for his dedication.
SEPTEMBER
2010 Often,
a healthy dose of luck goes with the skill and experience of
Police work to get good successes. Westville Crime Prevention
members Cst Naiker and Cst (f) Coles had one such incident in
September for which they were awarded Bust of the Month.
While
patrolling Dawncliffe area they spotted a suspicious vehicle with
three occupants and decided to stop it. As they made the occupants
get out the car, the passengers started running into bush with Cst
Naiker in hot pursuit on foot. He managed to catch one and
returned to the road with him in handcuffs. When he got back, Cst
Coles told Naiker that she had searched the driver and found a
firearm on him. A more thorough search of the vehicle turned up a
second firearm, a crowbar, screwdrivers, gloves and several items
of jewelry, coins and other suspected stolen property.
In
short time, the suspects and property were linked to a house
breaking that occurred only minutes before their capture and
arrest, the home owner was not even aware of the incident.
Investigation
is continuing and the suspects have been charged and have appeared in
court.

AUGUST
2010
Over a period of several months, House Robberies in Westville were suspected to be the work of possibly one group. The method in which the crimes took place and other clues, led D/Cst M.M. Zulu to believe this and he was personally carrying and investigating the cases.
A breakthrough was made in the second week of August when a Crime Prevention unit led by W/O (f) Van Staden received a tip off about two of the suspects wanted for the crimes. Identikits had been placed in the Community Service Centre at the Westville SAPS and a person recognised the pictures. (Credit to the Police artist!)
The Unit went to an informal settlement near Westville and arrested two of the dangerous criminals. An item of property identified to be stolen in one of the house robberies was also recovered.
Once in police care, Cst Zulu was able to link the two positively to cases he was
investigating and further following up by him led to more stolen property being recovered.
Well done to the whole unit for jumping quickly on hot information and securing a valuable double arrest.

FEBRUARY

Westville Case 91/02/2010 Arrest for Housebreaking, Tuesday 2010-02-09 at approximately 06h00.
On the above date at approx 02h25, Cst Mandlenkosi Aubrey Thango and his crew, S/Cst Ngcobo attended a complaint of attempted housebreaking in Methven Rd, Westville. He was well aware that there has been a spate of similar offences in that same area over the past weeks.
He could hear dogs barking further up the road, so informed the complainant he would return later in the morning to open a case as he wished to follow up investigation.
Further up the road on foot, Cst Thango could hear noises coming from inside a yard. He peeped through the bushes and spotted two suspects attempting to force open a kitchen door. At this point he called for back up, on his handset, from both Westville SAPS (Cst B.P. Khumalo and S/Cst(f) Kkhanyile) and Metro dog unit members, who responded immediately.
The suspects fled the scene and all the members gave chase but their progress was hampered as the suspects were jumping walls between yards. For the rest of the night as the members circled the area, the determined suspects continued to break into houses in the area.
At approximately 06h00, Cst Thango decided to patrol Blair Atholl
Road as it borders the area and is the escape route which the suspects could take out of the area. He spotted a pedestrian, carrying a denim bag, who matched the description of one of the suspects he had seen through the bush earlier that night.
As Cst Thango stopped to search the suspect, the suspect fled into bush and Cst Thango once again gave chase. The foot chase led down a steep ravine into a river. He managed to catch up to and arrest the suspect. The suspect was found in possession of several items described by various complainants that night, including a gold bracelet, and a Dis-Chem card with a serial number on it.
Extremely good, dedicated work, by this member and his colleagues, who take the combating of crime in Westville and the interests of the Community seriously.

AUGUST
2009
Two rising stars at Westville SAPS were awarded “Bust of the Month” for August. Constable Mbuso (M.E.) Mkhize and S/Constable Innocent Mpangase were on duty midnight Monday 3 August patrolling Westville Central. They noticed a suspect walking on the M13 struggling under the weight of a large cardboard box. When the suspect saw the Policemen, he put down the box and began walking away. Liberty seemed to take preference over the possession of the contents. The two Constables stopped him and searched the box, finding it full of bottles of liquor and ciders. After brief questioning, they loaded the suspect and his stash into the van and took a drive to Ultra Liquors on Buckingham Terrace as this business has had several incidents of housebreaking in recent weeks. There they found that
there had been forced entry into the premises via breaking of a window. That scene was preserved and the two Policemen continued to search the area for an accomplice. Near the vicinity of the Westville Mall where they found a second suspect already into the thick of enjoying the fruits of his ill gotten gains.
Both suspects were placed under arrest for housebreaking and possession of stolen goods and the investigation continues in linking them to the scene via fingerprints found on the bottles and at the scene of crime.
Superintendent DM Singh, Station Commissioner of SAPS Westville applauded the good effort. “This example of diligence and going the extra mile is a fine example set for us all.”
Well done to the officials for their good work. They were awarded with meal vouchers courtesy of Frank, owner of Chez Nous restaurant in Blue Heights
Centre, Westville.

2009 In June, the Westville "Bust of the Month was awarded to three members of Westville SAPS.
In the picture from left to right, Spur Pavilion Manager, Mr Brett Bowman, Cst Morris, S/Cst Khathi, Cst Thobakgale.
On Friday 29 May, the three were involved in the tracing and arrest of three suspects wanted for robbery on the Spine
Rd area near the Pavilion shopping centre. One suspect was already described and pointed out by a complainant who had been robbed the week before. At that time the policemen chased the suspects on foot all the way to the Chesterville swimming pool but lost them on the way. On the next Friday, they recognised the same group back in Westville and made the arrest. All the suspects are appearing in court at Pinetown.
Well done guys, we are proud of you.

light.
On Monday the 14th July 2008 further information was received and

If it were not for the dedication of the members involved this
case would have gone unsolved. The members worked without holding
back and the successes are proof of their dedication.

Police Forum would like to commend Detective Inspector Shaun
Lessing, Detective Inspector Adel Meyer and R/Constable Vugane
Ndlovu for their commitment. - August 2008
